Are online acting classes worth it?

What are some benefits from taking an online acting class?

Here are three benefits a remote acting class offers.

  1. You have the opportunity to work with people from all around the globe in a remote acting class. Previous to the pandemic, students were confined to local training or having to travel great distances abroad. Nowadays, with the advent of virtual learning, students can gain the benefit of training with an acting coach or acting approach of their choice, regardless of the location.

  2. You have the comfort of being in your own familiar home environment which can allow you to take bigger risks because you feel safe there. It takes time in a new environment to find comfort with your surroundings. Being in your own home gives you a ground that makes it easier to drop into the work in less time.

  3. An online acting class allows for a rather seamless transition into the creative realm. You forgo the distracting steps of commuting to a studio / rehearsal space, entering a social environment / reception area and having to let go of the sensory barrage from the outside world.

What can I learn in a virtual acting class?

Here are three key lessons you can learn in an online acting class.

  1. One of the key acting lessons you can learn virtually is how to act effectively for film. Film acting is primarily about expression in the eyes and subtle facial movements. In the film medium, these subtle facial movements convey to an audience your level of emotional connection and believability. Working within the confines of a frame in an online acting class, allows you to practice focused embodiment so you can translate that to the face and eyes.

  2. There is a unique intimacy in a virtual class where we learn to feel each other up close and personal. We can focus on each other’s subtle voice and facial cues. The details and minutiae stand out as the tone of voice or facial expression changes. We enter each other’s personal world more directly. There is a built-in vulnerability from being seen in your own personal private space – that if you open to it – places you right where you need to be for your acting work. Your work is automatically more personal.

  3. A third essential learning tool in the virtual classroom is that you learn to focus and concentrate. You are looking into all the little boxes in front of you with nowhere else to look. Therefore, when you are acting in a virtual setting, your level of heightened awareness needs to be ultra-sharp. This medium is unique in that it parallels the film world in that it magnifies your thoughts and reads your inner emotional landscape.

Are online acting classes for beginner actors?

Yes! Yes! And Yes! Of course, you’ll want to make sure that the class is geared towards beginner acting students. Here is a blog article that talks about what to look for in a beginner acting class in general.

Are there any free online Acting Classes?

Remote acting classes, although rarely free, are less expensive than in person acting classes. You can receive high quality training for a fraction of the cost of an in person acting class. And you save on travel expenses as well.

Finally, online acting classes are definitely worth it with their own unique benefits and lessons. Remote acting classes are here to stay!
