Inspiration for the Actor

Is acting for me?

You have a dream! When you watch a film, you can’t stop saying to yourself “I want to do that!” You need to express yourself but haven’t found the right outlet for it yet. You want to grow in your ability to express yourself, to be emotionally vulnerable and truly authentic in your relationships. You want more presence and confidence in the workplace. You are always “acting” anyway, and now you want to develop your skills.

And maybe there is doubt. Maybe you lack confidence or you’re not sure if you have the talent. Or you know you have the talent, but you can’t quite seem to take it to its full potential. Perhaps you have your parent’s voice in your head saying “Acting! You can’t make any money acting. Are you out of your mind?!” Or maybe life has felt stuck and you’re afraid to take the next step. All of this is human. All of this makes sense on the path of anyone who has ever felt called towards the arts.

Listening to Your Heart and Soul

I believe your heart and soul knows what they’re moving toward. If you feel genuinely pulled toward acting – whether for creative expression, emotional growth, or the possibility of a future career – that pull exists for a reason. Often, it’s a combination of talent, longing and a personal desire to grow that sits underneath fear or self-doubt.

But to know what’s true for you, you need to listen.

Our culture teaches us to do, to perform, to produce. But acting – real acting – begins with listening.

How do you learn to listen to your heart and soul – and ultimately to what is calling you? By going deep within and making space for what is here now – inside of you. Unfortunately, with the values in our culture being about “doing” and “producing,” we seldom take the time to just “be” and “listen.” But if you truly want to connect to your truth, you will need to change the way you are approaching life.

Being and listening is a practice, and it is something you can do on a daily basis when you are simply walking in nature or on the street. Wake up your five senses. Listen with your eyes, your ears, your nose, and your skin. Do a moving mediation to get the creative energy running through your body, then sit and breathe deep into your heart, gut, and pelvis and listen to what your body has to say.

If you are new to this, it may take a while to hear, feel, sense, or intuit something. Just tune in to your breath to begin with and be with it for a while. Then attune yourself to your body’s sensations and “be with” or focus on them. Finally, notice any feelings, longings, images, or thoughts that are arising organically. What are they trying to tell you? Do this daily until you get an urge to move forward. That urge will come with time spent “being”.

If your truth is “I’m not sure if acting is for me,” then go to the library or a bookstore and find a book on acting. Watch interviews with actors. Explore what the craft actually involves. Or reach out and talk to an acting teacher about acting classes – not to commit, but simply to learn.

If your honest truth is “I need to act”, then listen. Acting is an expressive art form that gives you a voice, a pathway, and a place to let the parts of yourself you’ve kept hidden be seen. If fear shows up, it simply means the desire matters. Fear accompanies anything worth doing.

The only way to validate your inner truth is to try.

What Acting Gives You

Acting offers more than technique. It gives you emotional freedom, deeper presence, stronger confidence, and a connection to your authentic self. It also asks for discipline and responsibility – a supportive kind of discipline, that shapes you into a grounded, expressive artist. If you feel the stirring toward acting – whether for self-growth, personal expression, or the possibility of a career – follow it. Let yourself explore. Let yourself be surprised by what you discover.
